    The best lunch and view on the island! Dudley Wines Cellar Door is perched on the stunning cliff tops of the Dudley Peninsula with unparalleled views across Backstairs Passage back to Australia.

    Only a couple of minutes away from Cuttlefish Bay Cottage, Kangaroo Island’s pioneer winery offers tasting flights of their handcrafted wines alongside gourmet pizzas and platters. You can even hit a bucket of golf balls at the old “tinnies” in the gully. The playground is a welcome distraction for the kids. 

    Dudley Wines also host Sunday Vibes live music on the first Sunday of every month.

  • False Cape Wines

    Fifteen minutes from the cottage, False Cape Wines offers platters, delicious pies and wine tasting. During winter there is an open fire, while summer allows you to sit outside on a great deck overlooking the vines and let the kids loose on the playground.

  • Kangaroo Island Spirits

    Only 50 minutes away is Kangaroo Island Spirits, also known as KIS, home of bespoke distilled products. Their First Harvest Juniper Gin is produced exclusively from juniper grown in their distillery garden on Kangaroo Island, representing the world’s first gin made with 100% Australian grown juniper berries. A highly recommended stop for their delicious drinks, beautiful garden setting and a bite to eat from the food truck. As an extra special treat, KI Spirits have resident koalas in their gum trees!

  • Cliffords Honey Farm

    Clifford's Honey Farm is a must-visit farm-gate experience dedicated to the world's only pure strain of Ligurian bees, unique to Kangaroo Island. Visitors can sample rare, distinctive honey varieties, watch bees in a glass observation hive, and enjoy the famous homemade honey ice cream.

    If you're heading to Flinders Chase or Seal Bay, it’s definitely worth stopping at the Vivonne Bay General Store for their famous Whiting Burger. Eat in, or order to take away to eat at the Vivonne Bay Beach, recently voted Australia's best beach.

    Kangaroo Island Brewery is the islands first microbrewery and is a great little stop to stock up on some local KI 'hand built beers'.

  • Seal Bay Conservation Park

    Seal Bay is the only place in the world where you can walk among a wild colony of the endangered Australian sea lions on a guided beach tour or observe them at your own pace from a 900m boardwalk.

    Two hours from the house, Flinders Chase is a vast, rugged wilderness sanctuary on Kangaroo Island known for its globally famous coastal landmarks, including the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. It offers essential an Australian adventure, combining dramatic clifftop scenery with abundant native wildlife sightings, from kangaroos and koalas to long-nosed fur seals.

  • Admirals Arch

    Admirals Arch is a spectacular natural rock archway carved out of the cliff face by thousands of years of pounding waves, located near the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse. A scenic boardwalk leads you to the arch, providing a perfect vantage point to watch a lively colony of long-nosed fur seals playing on the rocks and in the water below.

    Perched dramatically on a granite dome above the sea in Flinders Chase National Park, the aptly named Remarkable Rocks are a stunning collection of granite boulders carved into surreal shapes by 500 million years of erosion.     Just 15 minutes from the cottage and standing on the easternmost point of Kangaroo Island, Cape Willoughby is the oldest lighthouse in South Australia, first lit in 1852. Visitors can take a guided climb up the tower for stunning panoramic views over the rugged coastline and the treacherous Backstairs Passage, offering a rich glimpse into maritime history.

  • D’Estrees Bay

    D'Estrees Bay is a historic and secluded coastal stretch on Kangaroo Island's south coast, prized for its raw, beautiful scenery, excellent fishing, and great surf breaks. Part of the Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park, it offers remote camping spots, scenic drives, and a chance to explore remnants of the island's early whaling history.

    The Ravine des Casoars is a dramatic, steep-sided gorge on Kangaroo Island's wild west coast, named for the now-extinct dwarf emus mistaken for cassowaries by early French explorers.   • American River

    American River is a tranquil seaside village nestled on a sheltered ocean inlet, making it Kangaroo Island's most protected harbour and a haven for birdwatching and aquatic activities. This historic port is also the perfect spot to sample the island's famous aquaculture, with local oysters and seafood fresh from the working wharf.

    The Independence, the first ship to be built in South Australia, was constructed here.  Visit the green shed on the wharf to see the ship being rebuilt by volunteers.

  • KI Visitor Centre

    Who doesn't love a visitors’ centre? Right on your way out of Penneshaw is the Kangaroo Island Visitors Centre, a great spot to visit to learn all about the island, its locals and attractions.

  • Penneshaw IGA

    A terrific little store and great place to stock up for your stay on the Dudley Peninsula. The Penneshaw IGA supermarket is less than 15 minutes from the house and stocks a great range of fresh and local produce.

  • Penneshaw Hotel Bottle Shop

    The bottle shop next door to the Penneshaw Pub stocks a good range of alcoholic beverages, including lots of local drops. 

Getting to and around Kangaroo Island

  • Getting to Kangaroo Island

    Kangaroo Island is a short 30-minute flight from Adelaide to Kingscote Airport. 

    SeaLink operates vehicle and passenger ferries between the island (Penneshaw) and the mainland (Cape Jervis) with multiple departures daily, with the trip taking 45 minutes. It is best to book your ferry in advance to avoid disappointment.  You can also call their helpful team on 13 13 01.  Be sure to arrive 30 mins prior to your ferry departure to give you enough time to check in and load your vehicle. 

    Kangaroo Island’s remoteness has created a special environment, free from pests and diseases found in mainland Australia. Please be aware of the quarantine requirements for visiting the island. Honey and dirty potatoes are items that cannot be brought to the island.

  • Getting around Kangaroo Island

    It is highly recommended you have your own vehicle to fully enjoy the island. You can bring your own vehicle to the island on the SeaLink ferry.

    Car hire is available in both Penneshaw and at Kingscote Airport. There are no taxis on the island.
